8. Glowing Log Slice Lights

Got a tree that came down recently, or access to some free log slices? This project turns rustic wood into charming pathway markers. They’re especially fitting for woodland or cottage-style gardens.
Materials: Log slices (about 2 to 4 inches thick), drill with a large spade bit, LED tea lights or solar puck lights, sandpaper, optional wood sealer.
How to make them: Drill a shallow hole in the top of each log slice, just deep enough to recess a tea light or puck light. Sand the surface smooth and apply a weatherproof wood sealer if you’d like them to last longer. Place a light in each hole and set the slices along your pathway.
Time: 1 to 2 hours
Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate
Customization: Use slices of different diameters for a more natural, varied look. You can also engrave or wood-burn simple designs like a leaf, a moon, or your house number into the surface before sealing.
The contrast between the rough bark edges and the soft glow of the light is really something. They blend right into a natural setting and feel like they’ve always been there.
