9. Soft Pastel Toy Bench with Cushion Top

9

If you want a softer, sweeter look for a nursery-style or younger child’s playroom, a pastel toy bench with a cushion top is a lovely choice. Think soft blush pink, sage green, sky blue, or creamy butter yellow, paired with a tufted cushion that doubles as a comfy seat.

Materials include pine boards for the structure, foam padding for the cushion top, batting, a half yard of upholstery fabric, decorative nails or buttons for tufting, and low-VOC pastel paint. Plan on a full day for this one, with the most time spent on the cushion.

Build a basic toy box, then create a separate cushioned top that sits on the lid and can be lifted off for opening. Tuft the cushion by sewing buttons through the fabric and foam, or use a simpler approach with a few decorative nails in a grid pattern. Either way, it adds a soft, plush element to the otherwise wood-heavy piece.

Choose a fabric that is durable and washable, since this is a kid’s space. Outdoor fabrics, performance fabrics, and tightly woven cottons are all good options. A subtle pattern, like a small floral, stripe, or polka dot, hides minor stains far better than a solid color.
