6. Montessori-Style Low Open Toy Bench

6

Inspired by Montessori principles, a low open toy bench encourages independence by letting children see and reach their toys on their own. Instead of a closed lid, this design has an open top with two or three deep compartments for sorting blocks, animals, and books.

Materials include one sheet of ¾-inch plywood, 1×6 boards for dividers, wood screws, child-safe wood filler, and a low-VOC natural oil finish like tung oil or hemp oil. The build itself is fairly simple and takes about three to four hours, even for a beginner.

Cut your plywood into a wide, low rectangle, around 36 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 14 inches tall. Add vertical dividers inside to create three open storage cubbies. Sand all edges round, fill any screw holes, and finish with a natural oil that lets the wood grain show through.

The real magic of this design is the way it teaches kids to put things back. Because everything is visible and within reach, even a two-year-old can return toys to their “home” on the shelf. Add small fabric bins in each cubby for a softer, organized look.
