8. Toy Box Bench with Built-In Bookshelf

8

Why stop at toys when you can also build in a small bookshelf? This hybrid design features a toy box on one side and a vertical or horizontal book display on the other, giving you storage for both toys and storybooks in a single footprint.

Materials include ¾-inch plywood for the main structure, 1×4 boards for the shelf dividers, edge banding, hinges, wood screws, and your choice of paint or stain. This build is more involved and typically takes six to eight hours, but the payoff is a multifunctional piece that grows with your child.

Sketch out the design so that the toy box takes up about two-thirds of the unit, and the bookshelf takes the remaining third. A vertical bookshelf with four to five small cubbies works well for board books and picture books. Build the two sections as one connected unit, then add a continuous lid across the toy box portion.

This is a great choice for smaller playrooms where floor space is limited. You can also add small caster wheels to the back, so the entire unit can tip forward and roll out of the way when you need to vacuum.
