7. Vintage Crate Style Toy Box Bench

There is something undeniably charming about an old wooden crate. This vintage crate style toy box bench captures that feeling by using tongue-and-groove planks and decorative metal corner brackets for an old-world look. It is a great way to add warmth to a playroom without going too themed.
You will need tongue-and-groove pine planks, 1×2 trim for the frame, decorative metal corner brackets, a hinge set, and your choice of stain. A medium walnut or driftwood stain gives the most authentic vintage look. Expect the project to take about five hours, mostly because of the tongue-and-groove assembly.
Build the box by first creating a simple frame from the 1×2 boards, then fitting the tongue-and-groove planks into the frame for the sides, front, and back. The lid can be made from a few planks glued together with a couple of cross supports underneath for stability. Attach the decorative corner brackets on the outside corners for that authentic crate look.
To add a little extra vintage charm, lightly distress the edges with sandpaper and seal with a matte wax finish. A stenciled monogram or a hand-painted number on the front can give it a personalized touch.
