5. Felt Gnome Wreath

5

Gnomes, also called tomtes, have become a beloved Christmas symbol. Their pointy hats and fluffy beards are easy to recreate with felt, and the result is a whimsical wreath that makes people smile.

Materials: Felt in grey, white, and red, a 12-inch wreath form, cotton batting or faux fur for the beard, a small wooden bead for the nose, and hot glue.

Instructions: Cut a triangle from red felt for the hat. Cut a half-circle from grey felt for the body. Glue the body to the wreath form. Add a thick layer of cotton batting for the beard, shaping it into a soft triangle. Place the wooden bead nose at the top of the beard. Glue the hat above the nose, letting it flop to one side. Add a small felt belt if you like.

Time and difficulty: Two to three hours. Intermediate, mainly because of the beard shaping.

Customization: Change the hat color to green, blue, or buffalo check. You can also make a female gnome with braids made from yarn.

Common mistake: Using too little glue for the beard. The beard is the focal point, so secure it well.

Display: This wreath is a conversation starter. Hang it on your front door and pair it with a welcome mat that says something cozy.
