7. Bamboo Bundle Butterfly Hut
Hollow bamboo canes are close to ideal butterfly habitat. Cut them into short lengths, bundle them together with the open ends facing outward, and you’ve created a stack of natural tunnels.
Materials: 15 to 20 bamboo canes, a hacksaw, natural twine or stainless wire, a wooden backing board, and a roof scrap. Cut canes into 8-inch lengths, then bundle them tightly with the hollow ends facing one direction. Bind the bundle at both ends.
Attach the bundle to a backing board and add a small overhanging roof above it. Leave the front open so butterflies can enter any of the tunnels. Cap the rear ends with a board so wind doesn’t blow straight through.
Time: 45 minutes. Difficulty: beginner. This is one of the least expensive builds here, and it’s a smart way to use up bamboo from an overgrown patch.
