2. Tiered Strawberry Pallet Planter

2

Strawberries practically beg to be grown vertically, and a tiered pallet planter is a charming way to do it. Start with two pallets of similar size, some landscape fabric, heavy-duty staples, and a few dozen strawberry plants. The construction involves standing one pallet upright as the back panel, attaching the second pallet at a ninety-degree angle as the base, and lining the entire interior with two layers of fabric to hold soil. Build it in about two to three hours. The difficulty is moderate, mainly because of the cutting and stapling involved. Plant strawberries along each slat opening, then watch the runners cascade beautifully during fruiting season. For visual interest, hang a small chalkboard sign from a piece of twine to label each variety. This idea is wonderful for patios, balconies, and anyone wanting a productive garden in a tight footprint. A common mistake to avoid is using treated lumber, which can leach chemicals into the soil and your food.
