7. Animal Face Rocks
Animal face rocks are a wonderful way to practice simple shapes and expressions. Cats, foxes, owls, pandas, and bears all translate well to stone. You do not need to be a portrait artist; a few well-placed triangles, circles, and lines are enough to suggest the animal.
Materials: smooth oval or round rocks, acrylic paint, fine-tip brush, pencil, clear sealer, optional googly eyes.
Instructions:
- Sketch the basic face shape in pencil. For a fox, draw a wide triangle for the head and two smaller triangles for ears.
- Paint the base color and let it dry.
- Add the eyes, nose, and mouth with a fine brush. Keep the features small and centered.
- Add ear details, whiskers, or cheek spots.
- Seal the rock once it is completely dry.
Time: 25–40 minutes. Difficulty: Beginner. Customization: Turn them into pets by matching your own cat or dog’s colors. Make a set of woodland animals for a child’s room. Display ideas: Line them on a bookshelf, tuck them into fairy gardens, or use them as place card holders at a party. Budget alternative: Use a black permanent marker for the smallest features. Common mistake: Painting the eyes too high or too large. Sketch first, then adjust before adding paint.
